Prayer is a powerful tool of change taken for granted in our world today. Prayer is a channel through which we gain God’s invitation for intervention in all situations for solutions. Prayer makes God have a reservation in His heart for you thereby making all things work out for your good and perfect all that concerns you. Today, we will talk about 10 reasons why we pray.
I believe in the power of prayer, because we see through scriptures of how ordinary men called upon God in prayers and gained intervention, thereby changing their positions into what the world could not comprehend. Such men are Abraham, Jabez, Jacob, David, Apostle Paul, Elijah. It is littered through the holy scriptures how men command breakthrough through the power of prayers.
If men will take advantage in the power of prayer, then there will be dramatic change of story. Just and just when men say it is over for you, He makes it become like a dream of the night how He will turn your life around.
10 Reasons Why We Pray To God
There are several reasons why we pray to God. Below, we will highlight and discuss 10 major reasons why Christians pray to God.
1. Through Prayer We Gain Direction From God
The Bible speaking in Jeremiah 33:3 Call unto me and I will answer and I will show you great and mighty things which you know not. Prayer is a channel through which God reveals His plans for our lives when we call upon Him. Until there is a call, there cannot be answers from Him.
The great and mighty things prepared for you can only become a reality by prayers.
When in distress and down in life, call upon God and He will step into your situation to bring you into His perfect plans for you.
2. Prayer Brings Us Into Intimacy With God
Prayer brings us into a place of intimacy with God, where it is now a relationship than a casual approach. It is often said that communication is a vital part of a healthy relationship. Every relationship that will last long must be built on the foundation of effective communication. Prayer brings us closer to God because we know His mind, and He knows ours too and even helps us to work on our imperfections.
When prayer becomes a lifestyle, breakthroughs become the order of the day, because He makes all things possible for you.
3. Encounters With God Are Obtained Through Prayer
Prayer is a force that brings down strongholds holding us back from encountering God. When we pray, it brings us into a place of encounters with God. If men can kneel before God, they will arise with encounters that bring them breakthroughs and the boldness required to walk through life. We go with enquiry in prayers but return with encounters as answers.
4. Through Prayer We Receive Strengthening From God
There are times we become weak in the journey of our assignment here on earth, we grow weary and sometimes we really want to give up; but the scripture made us to understand in Isaiah 40:31: "But those who wait for the Lord [who expect, look for, and hope in Him] shall change and renew their strength and power; they shall lift their wings and mount up [close to God] as eagles [mount up to the sun]; they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint or become tired" (Amplified version).
Prayer is an act of waiting on God to be strengthened for the journey of your assignment. In Psalms 84:7, it says, "They go from strength to strength [increasing in victorious power]; each of them appears before God in Zion" (Amplified version).
Prayer is a channel through which you exchange your weakness for His strength, give it all up to God and you will be strengthened. Do not let your strength be small, gather strength in place of prayer so you won’t fall in the days of adversity.
5. Change Of Identity
We see in Genesis 32:26 as it says:
26-Then He said, Let Me go, for day is breaking. But [Jacob] said, I will not let You go unless You declare a blessing upon me.27-[The Man] asked him, What is your name? And [in shock of realization, whispering] he said, Jacob [supplanter, schemer, trickster, swindler]!28-And He said, Your name shall be called nomore Jacob [supplanter], but Israel [contender with God]; for you have contended and have power with God and with men and have prevailed.29-Then Jacob asked Him, Tell me, I pray You, what [in contrast] is Your name? But He said, Why is it that you ask My name? And [the Angel of God declared] a blessing on [Jacob] there.30-And Jacob called the name of the place Peniel [the face of God], saying, For I have seen God face to face, and my life is spared and not snatched away.
In this Bible story, Peniel had his identity changed from that of a man to a nation. Praying is wrestling, and when we do, our identity is changed. The Bible says as Jesus prayed, the version of His countenance was altered. Prayer has the ability to give you that identity you desire. Pray!
6. Fulfillment Of Destiny
We see in 1 Timothy 1:18 as it says, "This charge I commit unto thee, son Timothy, according to the prophecies which went before on thee, that thou by them mightest war a good warfare. Also in 1 Corinthians 16:9, it is said, "For a great door and effectual is opened unto me, and there are many adversaries."
If you must see the light, then you must war against darkness. It takes much prayers to see the reality of your destiny in God; no man fulfils destiny by accident—it is often birthed through prayer. If you must overcome adversaries, you must pray!
7. By Praying, We Are Guaranteed God's Protection
You are only secure in God because in Psalms 91:1, it is said, "He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall remain stable and fixed under the shadow of the Almighty [Whose power no foe can withstand]."
You can also read Psalm 91 further, to see the advantages that come with abiding in the shadow of The Almighty God.
Prayer becomes a shield when done consistently because you are now in God and God in you.
8. Prayer Is God's Commandment To Us
Jesus speaking in Luke 18:1, "Also [Jesus] told them a parable to the effect that they ought always to pray and not to turn coward (faint, lose heart, and give up)."
Also in 1 Thessalonians 5:17, it is said, "Be unceasing in prayer [praying perseveringly]; NLT Version of the scripture says never stop praying."
Even Jesus knows the power made available in prayer and He instructed us to pray so also Apostle paul.
9. Prayer Brings Us Restoration
Prayer has ability to restore lost years and seasons to bring us into a place where we are supposed to be in life. Prayers to God has the ability to restore our lost years that the enemy had taken from us. He restores us even in double fold, so do not give up on your own life because God has not, and He has the ability to restore all that you might have lost. Pray!
10. Sensitivity/Discernment
We live in a dark world and we cannot afford to be unaware in our world today. Prayer sharpens your ability to discern and be sensitive to the happenings around you. It enables you to navigate rightly.
The Bible speaking in Ephesians 5:17 says, "Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is. Pray always and you will know the right thing to do always."
